Der Kookaburra
The Laughing Kookaburra
(dacelo gigas)
This
kookaburra, is infrequently found in the immediate vicinity of Whyalla area
itself, although is known to be in the region surrounding Whyalla. The laughing
kookaburra is also known as the Giant Kingfisher, Laughing Jackass, and
Settler's Clock, the latter from the noise they make in the early morning.
These kookaburra's diet consists of small reptiles (including snakes up to about
2½ feet), insects, crabs, fish, and at times the young of small birds. They are
also known to scavenge around areas of human activity, and at times, have even
stolen steaks and sausages from barbeques when the cook wasn't watching.
